5 Nov: Inaugural New and Emerging Community Researchers seminar – Wellington.
This Tangata Whenua, Community and Voluntary Sector Research Centre one-day gathering will be held in conjunction with the centre’s AGM. Designed to provide feedback, encouragement, networking and dissemination opportunities to students researching issues that increase knowledge of the sector in Aotearoa - the seminar will engage with the work of up to seven chosen scholarship recipients, who will make brief presentations on their research and receive feedback from other researchers and fellow students. Two guest speakers will provide further input to the day.

6 Nov: Deadline for notice of intention to contribute to special edition of Third Sector Review on Social Enterpriseand Social Innovation.
In recent years, notions of social and community enterprise, social entrepreneurship and social innovation have permeated debates about the best ways to create social value, and address complex societal needs amid changing policy approaches and ever-increasing challenges to third sector funding. Critics of the enthusiasm for these ‘new’ ideas question whether they are demonstrably more effective than other forms of civil society activities, and research on these emergent ideas and practices in Oceania has, to date, been limited.
Abstracts of up to 500 words are sought for critically informed articles on social and community enterprise, social entrepreneurship and social innovation. Conceptual and empirical contributions are encouraged, including case study research, comparative analyses, survey research, theoretical contributions and voices ‘from the field’ (reflective contributions from practitioners.)
Successful submissions will be advised by 11 December 2009 and full papers must be submitted for review by 1 March 2010.

6 Nov: Deadline for nominations for Volunteering Canterbury’s Youth Volunteer Awards.
If you know a young person (under 21 years) who has made an extraordinary contribution to the Canterbury community, you can nominate them for a Youth Volunteer Award. Volunteering Canterbury offers these awards to raise awareness about volunteering and to recognise the contributions made by local youth.

12 Nov: The New Zealand General Social Survey seminar – Wellington.
The NZ General Social Survey (NZGSS) is an element of the Programme of Official Social Statistics (POSS), and is the first new and repeating social survey produced by Statistics NZ for a considerable length of time. This seminar will briefly cover the background to the NZGSS and provide an overview of the survey content. A range of specific examples will be used to illustrate the potential of the NZGSS to provide a better picture of social and economic outcomes in New Zealand than is available from pre-existing data sources.

13 Nov: Closing date for applications for the new Working Together More Fund - He Pūtea Mahi Tahi.
The Todd Foundation, Tindall Foundation, Wayne Francis Charitable Trust and the J R McKenzie Trust have introduced the new Working Together More Fund – He Pūtea Mahi Tahi. Groups of two or more organisations that are interested in exploring how they might work more closely together to make a greater difference can apply for financial assistance and/or expert help. There will be further funding rounds in 2010, (the next one closes on 12 March 2010).

18 Nov: Christchurch City Council sustainable funding workshop.
This evening workshop will be held from 5.30-8pm at the Horticultural Centre in Christchurch. The cost is $25 for voluntary organisations/individuals or $35 for Government agencies or business organisations. The workshop is designed to help community organisations examine their income streams, relationships with sponsors and community funders, increase income, generate new funds and develop a sustainable funding plan.
The Council also offers Get Set Go! and Spread the Word! - two essential courses for organisers of community recreation programmes and events. Workshops are three and a half hours long and cost $30 for voluntary organisations or $50 for business or government organisations.

An official gala luncheon awards presentation ceremony will be held in Auckland on 5 February 2010.
20 Nov: Passing Go Conference - Social wellbeing in the new Auckland Council , Harbour Function Centre, North Harbour Stadium, Albany.
The success of the new Auckland Council is dependent on strong and healthy communities. This conference brings together Auckland’s leading academics, political thinkers and expert practitioners to debate the crucial issue of how the new council can work to promote social wellbeing in Auckland. 26 Nov: Systems thinking for solving complex problems workshop – Christchurch.
This workshop will introduce ‘systems thinking’ as a tool for helping central and local government and communityand voluntary sector organisations work better together to address complex problems. Led by Professor KambizMaani, an internationally renowned expert in systems thinking and sustainable strategies, participants will learn how to use systems thinking as a tool for multi-dimensional, multi-stakeholder decision making at local and national levels.
26-27 Nov: The Most Significant Change (MSC) Technique – Pattillo workshop presented by Dr Jessica Dart of Clear Horizon – Wellington.
This two-day workshop will cover the interpretation of stories of significant change and the value of extensive dialogue up and down the organisational hierarchy. MSC is a rapidly emerging technique for monitoring change that is both qualitative and indicator free! Involving regular collection and interpretation of stories about change, MSC is a powerful tool for formative evaluation and organisational learning. Since the last time this workshop was run in New Zealand, Clear Horizon has adapted the technique to align with indigenous needs. This workshop will include experiential learning opportunities and designing your own MSC process.

27 Nov: Local Government for Central Government - Policy Advisors workshop – Wellington.
This workshop has been developed by the NZ Society of Local Government Managers (SOLGM) and the Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) specifically for central government policy analysts and advisors. The workshop will provide an understanding of local government processes and finances, the way local authorities work with their communities to promote well-being, and the importance of strong central and local government relationships. It will also introduce and explain the ‘Policy development guidelines for regulatory functions involving local government’ developed by DIAto assist policy advisors when they are considering policy and regulations that may affect local authorities.
27 Nov: Official Statistics: An Ethical Balance seminar – Wellington.
This presentation discusses how the 12 Principles of Official Statistics adopted by the United Nations Statistics Commission in 1994 have been implemented in New Zealand and gives some examples of recent challenges to these principles. Three major types of challenge have arisen in the last decade: direct challenges to specific UN principles of official statistics (such as first release practice and survey respondent confidentiality): the distinction between business and personal information; and the over-sampling or provision of information for only one section of the population (such as Maori). Specific examples, together with the New Zealand response, will be given for each of these.
30 Nov: Charities Commission AGM – Wellington.
The theme for this year’s meeting and forum is ‘the qualities of an effective charity’.
30 Nov: Closing date for applications for the Museum and Iwi Development Grants.
These grants support museums, iwi, and other culture and heritage organisations in projects that are part of a long-term plan and that contribute to achieving operational excellence, improve access to and understanding of collections and taonga and develop partnerships.

This disciplined way of thinking and taking action can be used to improve the quality of life in communities, cities, states, territories and nations. RBA can also be used to improve the performance of programmes, agencies and service systems. Many people are frustrated by efforts that are all talk and no action - RBA is a process that gets you and your partners from talk to action quickly.
10-11 Dec: Ethical Foundations of Public Policy conference in Wellington.
Hosted by the Institute of Policy Studies, School of Government, Victoria University of Wellington in association with the Philosophy Programme, Victoria University and the Center for Theology and Public Issues, University of Otago.
Over two days, more than 50 presentations of the latest research and insights will cover a range of important topics such as:
- What are the ethical constraints on those involved in different aspects of the policy process?
- How should ethical considerations be incorporated into policy advice and decisions?
- What decision rules should we apply when confronted with policy trade-offs and conflicting ethical imperatives?
- What obligations do we have to people in other countries and to future generations?
- How should we measure societal progress?
- What is the nature of the good society?

Various dates: The Institute of Directors (IOD) offers a range of professional development courses for board members. These include not-for-profit governance essentials offered in several locations. 16 April: E-engage your community conference – Christchurch.
The hands-on event will introduce people from voluntary organisations to internet-based tools that can help them meet their mission. If you use a web-based tool, such as Skype, Wikis, Picasa, Facebook, or Google apps, and would be willing to share your experience, please contact VolCan manager Ruth Gardner (phone 03 366 2442, e-mail mgr@volcan.org.nz) , with an outline of what you can offer, and a brief bio. Presentations can be either an hour long tutorial session in a computer suite, or a 20-minute case study demonstration with questions. Those who present will receive free Conference registration and a t-shirt. VolCan will reimburse pre-approved travel expenses. Registrations open early 2010.
22-23 April 2010: Together we can - Services for older people conference - Auckland.
The theme of this NZ Council of Christian Social Services 2010 conference is a call to build co-operation in the sector and a vision of working together with older people to make a difference in their lives and the lives of those around them.

Catholic Community Services will host this conference - the first of its kind internationally. The conference will have a focus on sustainable long-term interventions through exploring the experiences of severe domestic squalor within themes including:
- social isolation: the human rights context and social justice
- societal structures: the role of poverty, culture and ones lived experiences
- the collective impact: the environmental, community and financial consequences
- the need for collaboration: legislative and systemic issues.

26-29 Nov: 12th IAVE AsiaPacific regional volunteer conference - Kaohsiung, Taiwan.
Volunteerism as a lifestyle for social solidarity is the theme of this regional International Association for Volunteer Effort (IAVE) conference. It will provide an opportunity for NGOs, governments, and the corporate sector to work together on issues such as volunteer participation in large-scale international events, corporate social responsibility, ICT use in volunteer programmes, diversity and community engagement.

5-9 Oct: Fundraising 101 course – Fundraising Institute of NZ, Wellington.
For over 30 years the Fundraising School at Indiana University has worked to perfect Principles and Techniques of Fundraising as the ultimate fundraising course. They now work in conjunction with the Fundraising Institute of NZ to offer a five-day intensive course in NZ.
The 101 course enables attendees to respond to ethical dilemmas and challenges with professional skill, and learn to identify and validate prospective donors and manage the fundraising process. 101 provides the skills and confidence to plan a strategic fundraising programme, structure a successful solicitation and recognise how planned giving benefits your donors and your organisation. The course will be taught by Eva Aldrich (Associate Director of Public Service and The Fund Raising School at the Center of Philanthropy at Indiana University).

Grant Robertson is MP for Wellington Central. He is Labour Spokesperson for State Services and Associate Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs, and Arts, Culture and Heritage and is a member of the Government Administration select committee. 14 Oct: Good practice consultation with stakeholders: Maximising the benefits of engaging with communities - Victoria University Professional and Executive Development, Wellington.
Policy development and decisions in the public sector draw information and advice from various stakeholder groups, as well as the public at large. This full-day course will help participants design and implement a consultation process that is fit for purpose.
Reflecting on good practice principles and through a variety of practical exercises, attendees will improve skills in process design and in selecting the best methods and techniques to achieve the desired outcomes.
This practical course presented by Dianne Buchan (who is a full member of the NZ Planning Institute and the International Association for Impact Assessment), is for people in the public sector responsible for commissioning, designing or implementing consultation processes.

This Talentfinders workshop will help directors, trustees and chief executives to govern with one voice, but deliberate with many. It will show how the board creates the linkage between the organisation and community/owners, and help ensure valuable board time is spent on the most important things.

Held every two years, the awards recognise Kiwis with asthma or other respiratory illnesses who have a great attitude to life and achieve things, despite the challenges they face. Past nominees have included people who do well at school or at work, have interesting hobbies or talents, are right into sport or music, or simply put a smile on the dial of everyone they meet. They may simply be a really giving person. Eight supreme achievers will have their transport, meals and accommodation paid for when they are presented with an award by the Governor-General in Wellington in November. Each year, NZ Post makes postage-paid envelopes available to local non-profit organisations for use in fundraising, communication and other projects in their local region. Non-profit community organisations are invited to apply to one of 16 regional Community Post Boards; a group made up of local people from NZ Post and the community. Applications need to be for a specific project that will benefit your community, and allocations are generally for less than 500 envelopes due to the large number of requests received each year. Allocations are assessed at a regional level, so national organisations need to apply in the region they are located.
