The key dates, events and conferences listed below are of possible interest to community organisations and the government agencies that work alongside them.  Every attempt has been made to ensure details are correct at the time of posting, but details are subject to change.  This list is not exhaustive and we encourage you to check other sites for more activities of interest.

1 March:  Practical Project Management for Non-Profits full-day workshop - Christchurch

1-2 March:  Youth Violence & its Associated Difficulties two-day symposium, Te Puke
Developed by Strengthening Families in partnership with Relationship Services as an opportunity for the key sectors of community, education, police, justice, health and welfare to come together to learn of different approaches, develop understanding and find new ideas to inform practice and policy.  Day 1 is dedicated to treatment and research with presentations from leading clinicians, researchers and senior government representatives from throughout the country.  Day 2 will consider the steps that can be taken locally to reduce youth violence and promote positive behaviours through a series of workshops and panel discussions.  Designed as an accessible, quality event intended to be helpful for a wide range of people. Registrations cost $75 and includes all refreshments.  The Orchard Centre, Te Puke is located 20minutes from Tauranga airport.

7 March:  Celebrate Children's Day in New Zealand
Children's Day 2010 marks the 10th anniversary of the national event in Aotearoa.  Children's Day is a national, non-commercial day to celebrate how special and important our children are.

15 March:  Deadline for submisssions on Review of Part 6A of the Employment Relations Act 2000
The Department of Labour is seeking submissions to inform this review of legislation that provides a framework for continuity of employment where an employer's business undergoes restructuring and employees' work is assigned to a new employer.

16 March:  Hildy Gottlieb presentations - Hamilton
In conjunction with Community Waikato, the University of Waikato Management School is hosting presentations by Hildy Gottlieb, the president of the Community-Driven Institute. Once described as "a practitioner's practitioner", Hildy's credentials include teaching, writing and consulting in the community sector. There will be a community workshop held at Community Waikato's training room in the morning, and a seminar/discussion at Waikato Management School in the afternoon (3pm-5pm).

17 March:  6th Annual Christchurch Community House Funding Expo
Visit Christchurch Community House to access information from a wide variety of funders and attend workshops at this free event. In 2009, approximately 350 people from a wide variety of community organisations had the opportunity to visit 17 Funders static displays and attend 21 workshops free of charge at this central city community resource centre at 141 Hereford Street.

18 March:  IPANZ Parliament in Practice workshop: A practical introduction to Parliament - Wellington
This one-day workshop will provide an introduction to Parliament suitable for anyone new to the public service. It will include a general overview of the role of Parliament (including a tour and visit to select committees), as well as a look at public sector accountability to Parliament.  Organised by the Institute of Public Administration NZ.

19 March: Deadline for public submissions on Fair Trading (Soliciting on Behalf of Charities) Amendment Bill
This Bill aims to provide increased transparency and public accountability for professional third party collectors who are in the business of collecting funds on behalf of registered charities. The Bill would require those who fundraise for charities to make sure consumers know a portion of any donation will be held back to cover fees. If more than half of a donation is to be kept by the fundraiser they will be compelled to tell the donor the amount. The Bill will not impose any new obligations on charities themselves, and any fundraising they carry out directly using their own employees or volunteers will not be affected.
The Bill passed its first reading in December and is now open for public submissions, which are due by 19 March 2010.

19 March:  Participatory Leadership: Engaging to get Results - Wellington
In every organisation, group and community people are calling for leadership.  We want leaders who can work in new and collaborative ways, help us through chaos and draw on the best of all of us.  This calls for a new look at how we define leadership, who we call leaders and how we invite participation so that all of us can commit and contribute.  This one-day workshop offers an opportunity to define and refine your leadership focus while practicing potent ways for engaging others to take wise action. This Ministry of Justice consultation document was officially released on 4 December 2009.  Feedback is sought on 24 preliminary proposals that aim to improve government agencies' responses to victims of crime and to enhance victims' rights and role in criminal justice processes.

21-23 May:  NFP 2010 Open Space Un-Conference: Generational Change in the non-profit sector  - Auckland
This event will explore How to blend the best of the Baby Boomers with the best of Gen X & Y.  The agenda will be set by those participating using the Open Space process. There will be no formal seating and no Powerpoint presentations. Attendees will need to bring a sense of self-responsibility - wanting to participate and contribute. This is not a place to just listen passively - you'll engage in group discussions with experts, colleagues, and people who bring real life experience and practical strategies to address real issues. A second conference will also be held in Melbourne, Australia on 13-15 August 2010.

23-24 June:  IPANZ New Professionals 2010 Conference - Wellington
THis event will provide a platform for debate, networking and information gathering for the next generation of leaders, thinkers and policy shapers. The theme of this year's conference is 'Making a Difference', which will address the things that new professionals and those with an interest in public administration can do to make a difference to themselves, their organisations and beyond.

23-24 June:  VASS (NZ Federation of Vocational and Support Services) national conference - Auckland
The conference theme is 'Allies and Collaborators', and it will explore the concept of service providers as allies of the people they support (and their families), and what this means for the nature of the support they provide, and the relationship between ‘provider' and ‘client'. 
The conference will also examine the increasing call for social service agencies to collaborate, with a focus on:
- the concept of collaboration
- how service providers can collaborate with each other
- how providers can create better opportunities and outcomes for people with disabilities by collaborating and engaging with  a wide range of partners and agencies in the wider community, eg: other health and social services, schools, education providers, local councils, businesses, government agencies, etc.

25-27 June:  Community Patrols of NZ National Training seminar - Taupo
A community patrol is a voluntary group of people giving some of their time and taking responsibility within their own community to help the Police make their community a safer environment in which to live. Any citizen who has a caring attitude to their community may offer their services.

July 2010

Young people from around New Zealand are chosen by their local (electorate or list) Member of Parliament (MP) to be a Youth Member of Parliament (Youth MP). During Youth Parliament, Youth MPs have the opportunity to debate legislation, sit on select committees and ask parliamentary questions of Cabinet Ministers.

1 Aug:   Deadline for nominations for New Year Honours
The New Zealand Royal Honours System, administered by the Honours Secretariat, is comprised of The Order of NZ, The NZ Order of Merit, and The Queen's Service Order and Medal, a series of gallantry and bravery awards, The NZ Antarctic Medal, and The NZ Distinguished Service Decoration.  Anyone can nominate a person who they think is worthy of a NZ Royal Honour.

3-6 Nov:  2010 CharityChannel Summit Conference - Florida, USA
Charity Channel is now inviting expressions of interest from potential presenters - due by 28 Feb 2010. Presentation topics should be aligned with one of two categories: Non-profit Leadership or Non-profit Fundraising.  Presentation times range from: 1 1/2 hours, 3 hours or 6-hours. Conference attendees choose what sessions they wish to attend, with the average number of attendees at previous workshops being 35. The Summit is likely to attract more than 500 attendees from across the States and internationally.

25 Nov:  White Ribbon Day
White Ribbon Day is the international day when people wear a white ribbon to show that they do not condone violence towards women. It was started by a men’s movement in Canada in 1991 and was officially adopted by the United Nations as its International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. The campaign was introduced to New Zealand by UNIFEM (the United Nations Development Fund for Women) in 2004.

IYV+10
2011 is the 10th anniversary of the United Nation's International Year of Volunteers held in 2001.  As it did in 2001, the International Association for Volunteer Effort (IAVE) is preparing to give leadership to the non-governmental volunteer community in celebrating this global recognition of volunteering.
