Media coverage of Volunteer Awareness Week

This page highlights some of the news stories, press releases and media activity promoting Volunteer Awareness Week (VAW), however it is important to remember that VAW is mainly about celebrating volunteer activity. A large number of events happen that recognise the contribution of current volunteers and give new volunteers opportunities to give volunteering a go.  The Volunteering NZ website and VNZ Update include more extensive coverage of many VAW activities.

2009 - Do a world of good: Volunteer

Much of the 2009 publicity focused on how young people are involved in volunteering, but it was pleasing to see volunteers of all types highlighted in a broad range of media – including daily profiles in Wellington’s Dominion Post, and finalists in the National Volunteer Awards featured in Good magazine. A number of news articles recognised the increased importance of volunteers during the recession and happily noted that people are continuing to offer their services during these hard economic times.

Volunteering NZ focused the week on youth to recognise the long-term (often life-long) benefits of early involvement in community work, and celebrate the positive contributions young people are already making on their marae, in their communities and to society.

A number of newspaper supplements also appeared in daily newspapers around the country.  These included editorial about volunteering and were supported by advertisements from a range of voluntary organisations.

2008 - Go further: Volunteer

In 2008, SPARC erected billboards featuring special volunteers who played key roles supporting eight high profile sports stars from a variety of sports and representing different regions of the country. SPARC also ran radio advertisements featuring four sports stars telephoning their volunteer to say thank-you.

A number of volunteer centres were featured in radio interviews, many daily newspapers featured stories about volunteers and the week, and more than a dozen newspapers ran special Awareness Week features/advertorials/advertising supplements.

Note:

The lists on the page above DO NOT represent ALL media coverage of VAW, but only that captured through various media monitoring activities.  It is likely that television, radio and community newspaper coverage is under-represented in these summaries.  Stories and publications are listed to give a 'flavour' of the media coverage, rather than provide a comprehensive collection of all news.

The individual story links originally connected to various media websites, however over time the original stories are likely to be deleted from their host sites as they become out of date. We apologise for any inconvenience, however this is beyond our control, and we cannot update broken links.
