Building knowledge
It is important to have good data and information for all activity undertaken by community and voluntary organisations. This helps the government with its planning, decision-making and resource allocation. The Office for the Community and Voluntary Sector (OCVS) has a strong focus on research to obtain this knowledge.

Study of the New Zealand non-profit sector
This four-year project will help to provide a clear picture of the nature and extent of non-profit sector activity within New Zealand. Statistics New Zealand (SNZ) will produce a "non-profit institutions satellite account" which will provide a view of the size and economic value of non-profit institutions. Qualitative and quantitative data will be provided to Johns Hopkins University Centre for Civil Society Studies, USA, so New Zealand can be compared to other countries.

Community and Voluntary Sector Research Forum
The Community and Voluntary Sector Research Forum is hosted every three months for people who are working to increase the pool of information about the voluntary sector. Attendees at the forums include people who are doing research, or research-related projects, and people who promote or fund research. The forums are run by the Association of Non-Governmental Organisations of Aotearoa (ANGOA) and the OCVS.
